Text 5

第二節(jié)
Text 6
M: Mary, I am here!
W: Oh, hi! I’m sorry I’m so late. The car wouldn’t start, so I had to come by bus.
M: Oh, no. What do you think is the matter with your car?
W: Well, it wouldn’t start at all. I mean, I turned the key and nothing happened. So I guess it’s something to do with the electrical system.
M: Well, let’s forget about that now, and order our food. What would you like? The fish is good.
Text 7
M: Right, where shall we go now? We’ve seen the church and the modern art exhibition. I don’t know what else there is here.

W: You know, it’s really good of you to spend so much time showing me around.

Text 10
W: Oh, Frank’s in your class? He was in my class last term. I didn’t like him at all.
M: What? You didn’t like Frank? He’s one of my best students.
W: Oh, no. Not Frank! He was always asking questions. Frank always interrupted me and the other students. He was never quiet.
M: Yes, that’s Frank. That’s why he is such a good student. He is always thinking and trying to use English. He laughs a lot. Frank doesn’t worry about making mistakes. I enjoy having him in class.
W: Not me. I love students like David. Do you have him in your conversation class this term?
M: Yes, but to be honest, David is too quiet for me. I can’t tell if he’s learning. David is so silent. He doesn’t say anything.
W: Yes, that’s David. That’s how good students should be. They have to listen to their teachers.
Text 11
M: When I tell people that I paint the Golden Gate Bridge, they think I start at one end, paint to the other end, and then start again. But that’s not true. We are always painting the bridge. But we have to go where paint is in bad condition. It’s a dangerous job. You have to be careful all the time. You can’t work or appear without safety equipment. And the weather, it gets colder up here. Sometimes it’s so cold there’s ice on the bridge. You have to wear warm clothes. Sometimes it’s windy and foggy. On foggy days, you can’t see anything. Other times, you are both the fog. The view from the top is the thing that I love about the job. On a sunny day like today, you can see from the ocean to the port and all the way to the mountains.

Section B
Blank 11-13 are based on the following Passage.
The Common Wealth is a group of 54 countries. The member states all use English as a common working language and have similar legal and education systems, but represent nearly every religion, race and political system on the planet. The Common Wealth is active in a huge number of areas such as health and economics. The heads of government meeting is held every two years where the leaders of the member states get together to discuss current issues. Common Wealth Day is held in the second week of March every year when Common Wealth’s citizens, particularly children, have a chance to celebrate their friendship. The Common Wealth also holds sporting and arts events. There is an annual writer’s price and a yearly arts and crafts competition. Perhaps the most well-known event sponsored by organization is the Common Wealth games, which is held every four years in one of the member countries. The games have gained another name, the friendly games because of their reputation for good-natured competitiveness.
Questions:
11. What do the member states of the Common Wealth have in common?
12. What do people do on Common Wealth Day according to the passage?
13. What is the passage mainly about?
are based on the following speech.
There is a popular belief that a college education is something to be endured in order to become qualified to obtain certain kinds of jobs or to go to graduate school. This is not what we are trying to do at Harvard. The most obvious goal of a college educationer is to give knowledge, but it is far from the most important. Remarkably few of the facts you learn here will remain in your memory for many years, and some of those that do might be proved false by new knowledge. At Harvard, we have looked to other things we can give that will last a little longer. Among these things are certain habits of mind, such as the ability to have more critical analysis, to make more accurate and logical use of information and so forth. In addition to these habits of thought, it is our hope that we can help you develop certain attitudes of mind like a willingness to accept uncertainty and the lack of definite truth. Beyond providing these qualities, a college education should try to lay a foundation for the creative use of leisure time which can be cultivated in the classroom. Yet, the cultivation of this ability will also occur outside of the classroom. For example, on sports fields, in music rooms, and so on.
Questions:
14. Which of the following is regarded as the most important at Harvard?
15. Which quality mentioned below can be cultivated both inside and outside the classroom?
16. What is the speech mainly about?
Section C
Blank 17-20 are based on the following conversation.
W: Good morning! Green Sense. Can I help you?
M: Hello, my name is Mary White and I want to complain about a sea food restaurant.
W: OK, can I take down your telephone number?
M: My phone number is 655038.
W: Good! So what would you like to complain about?
M: Actually two things. First, the restaurant dumps its rubbish on the street and you can imagine what that attracts—rats!
W: Right! I’ve got that! And the second problem?
M: The restaurant doesn’t put bottles and cans in recycling bins. It’s not responsible.
W: Got it! What’s the address of the sea food restaurant?
M: It’s 449 Shanghai Street.
W: OK! We’ll look into it and call you back.
M: Thank you. Goodbye!
Complete the form. Write ONE WORD for each answer.
Blank 21-24 are based on the following conversation.
W: What’s the article about?
M: It’s basically about memory. And it says you’ve got three memories: short term, medium term and long term.
W: Um…
M: They say that short term memory lasts only a few seconds. So you just sort of read something and you remember the beginning of the sentence just until you get to the end of the sentence.
W: Um…
M: And then medium term memory. The example they give is something like trying to remember that you’ve got to buy bread.
W: Like a sort of a shopping list of things to do?
M: Yeah! After you buy bread, you don’t need to store that memory. So it’s erased.
W: Just sort of a day-to-day management.
M: Eh…then long-term memory. They are talking about the major events that happen in your life such as your wedding.
W: And you never forget them.
M: Yeah…I suppose so. Permanent memory.
謝謝

M: You’re lucky. I can drop you off on my way.

W: Harry, let’s play some ping-pong today.
M: I’d love to play a set or two, but my right arm hurts. I’ve decided to stop playing ping-pong until it feels better.
W: Well, how about going skating?
M: I’d like to, but my knee hurts, too.
W: Harry, stop making excuses! You’re just lazy.
M: No, I’m not! You know, there’s a basketball match on TV today. Let’s just stay home and watch it.

W: What do you want to do tonight?
M: How about going to the cinema? I should be home from work at 5:45. Then we can go out and eat before we see a film.
W: What do you want to see?
M: There’s a good art film at the Green House Cinema.
W: Let’s see…it starts at 6:15. I don’t think we can get there in time to see the beginning. How about the action film at the New State Cinema? It starts at 6:50. Perhaps the 7:00 one at the UME Cinema is even better. It stars Jackie Chan.

M: Hey, Lucy. Do you have some time to talk about next week’s trip with me?
W: Sure, Dave.
M: OK. So, we’re leaving on Monday from Hartsfield International Airport, and returning on Friday. Do we take ourselves to the airport? Maybe we need to book a taxi, or just go by bus.
W: No, we don’t have to. The company car will pick us up and take us there.
M: Oh, that’s good. When?
W: Our flight leaves at 11:00 a.m., so they should pick us up between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. Besides, the company pays for our trip, including hotel and food.
M: How much will that be?
W: Well, New York is a pretty expensive city. So, each of us will get $200 a day.
M: Oh, OK. Thanks for telling me that.
W: You’re welcome.

M: Yes, I used to be a tour guide for Chinese travellers.
W: Good. Now, how much money do you expect to have for a year?
M: From what I’ve read, it seems that a starting pay would be around $12,000 a year.
W: Here, you would start at $10,500 for the first year…a kind of training period. Then you would go to $15,000.
M: That sounds fair enough. What do you think are the chances for me to get a job here?
W: Well, I’m talking to three people today and four tomorrow. We’ll be hiring two people. You’ll hear from us sometime next month. Good luck! And thanks for coming in today.
Text 10
M: Well, I’d love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t imagine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of public transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.
